Construction of a new Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness at the corner of Elm Avenue and Emory Street should be completed by summer, volunteers said.
Since the old building was knocked down, the congregation's more than 100 members are worshipping at another church nearby until construction is completed.
"It's going to be pretty similar to the old one but with larger bathrooms and increased accessibility," said Joe White, a volunteer from a congregation north of Poway.
At 4,350 square feet, the new place of worship will be more than 1,000 square feet larger than the old building, which has been in Imperial Beach since 1960.
The sanctuary is being constructed in part by the church's Regional Building Committee, which includes volunteers and construction workers from congregations around the region.
Once construction of the new building begins, there will be more than 100 volunteers on-site, White said. More than 300 may help by the time the new building is completed.
