Groms Chase Waves at Katy's Endless Summer Surf Classic
Young surfers will compete for a chance to be named "best athlete all around."
November weather isn't always inviting but at a local café, summer is never-ending.
, here in IB, is hosting a grom surf classic. Not to be confused with groom surf classics where men in penguin suits brave the water while their brides cheer from the shore.
A “grom,” or grommet, is just a fun term for a young surfer. Katy’s “” is a competition for surfers 16 years old and younger.

The classic has five divisions:
- 8 and under
- 9-11 years old
- 12-13
- 14-16 years old
- all ages bodyboard
- 16 and under girls surf

Afterwards a barbecue will be held where awards and prizes will be handed out.
A “best athlete all around” will be named. The winner will receive a handmade Greg Broadfoot trophy, Natural Selections surfboard and photo session. Last year’s Grom Surf Classic's best all around athlete was Josh Johnson.
The surf competition is Sunday at 7:30 a.m. Since so much interest was shown beforehand, registration is now closed. The surf classic is free.
Katy's Cafe has been in Imperial Beach for more than and was a shooting location for the former HBO series John From Cincinnati.
IB beaches have been closed since Wednesday due to runoff from last week's rain, a closure which continued Friday. If the signs are still up Sunday morning the competition will be canceled, Fallon said.
