After Near Collapse of Bayshore Bikeway, Water Restored to Salt Pond

Pond 10A is expected to receive water from San Diego Bay Saturday. Flow to the pond was stopped after a portion of the Bayshore Bikeway nearly collapsed.

Work to repair a culvert that carries water to Pond 10A in Imperial Beach will be completed Saturday, said San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Manager Brian Collins.

About 400 tons of rock was used to reinforce the culvert and concrete will be poured into the ground above the series of pipes that carry water to Pond 10A.

As part of a habitat restoration project for the area, water from San Diego Bay began to flow to the ponds last year.

Tidal flow made erosion to the area stronger, and almost resulted in a collapse of the culvert. Above the culvert is a portion of the Bayshore Bikeway.

Repairs cost about $80,000, Collins said, and will be paid for with funds from the National Wildlife Refuge and its annual maintenance fund.
