Threatened with a Knife, Five Males Detained on Palm Ave.

Shortly after an incident by the AM/PM on Palm Ave., where a man was threatened with a knife, five male suspects were detained and searched on 13th & Palm Avenue.

According to eyewitness reports, at approximately 11:15 A.M. today, a verbal altercation between a couple in an SUV and five male pedestrians - "apparent gang members" - quickly escalated when the driver exited his vehicle only to be confronted by one - in a Charges jersey - with a 7" knife.   Upon spotting the one with a knife, and the other four beginning to circle around, the male driver male immediately threw up his hands and backed away, retreating to the cab of his truck to quickly, and safely speed away.

The five men continued walking abreast, east on Palm Avenue, "leaving no room for passing pedestrians", while reportedly "bullying everyone that past by or looked at them - by shadow boxing."

A few minutes later, sheriff's deputies made contact with the group of late teens/early 20's shaved-head, Hispanic males at the NW corner of 13th and Palm Avenue, where the knife wielding suspect was searched, hand-cuffed, and placed into the back of a patrol car.

I didn't stick around to see if everyone was arrested, although it did not appear the searches turned up any contraband, and no one else was cuffed after being searched.

Would you call the police if you witnessed something like this?

What would you do if you were forced to share the sidewalk with a group like this?

Do you think Charges jersey's are commonly associated with gangs?

Thanks for the post Marcus. There seems to be an increase in gang related activity and incidents within certain parts of IB lately. I'm sure the City and Sheriff's Department are aware of the situation and are doing what they can to better control and monitor and increase their presence in those affected areas. If not, they are doing a huge disservice to our community and the residences and businesses that are being underserved. Be aware, avoid potential danger areas and report any kind of law breaking activity that can harm people to law enforcement. Do not take matters into your own hands unless you feel you can handle the consequences. The documentation is needed to better serve and protect. To answer your questions: 1. Yes. 2. Avoid and let them pass. 3. I don't know if Charger's Jerseys are gang affiliated but I know that I own two of them and my neighbor is a Charger fanatic. When we get together to talk about our Chargers...then I guess you can call us a gang...even a street gang because we're always discussing out in the street in front of our homes. Lol.

'...a couple in an SUV and five male pedestrians -....the driver exited his vehicle ...' there is something wrong when a society thinks it has to fight to the death over a minor incident...

'..Would you call the police if you witnessed something like this?...' yea, i'd call the cops - we've got to have zero tolerance for crap in our communities... what's up with 13th street - why is there so much crime reported in that area....is there something there that attracts a 'bad crowd'....??

Yes, I would call 911 in a heartbeat! The community needs to report these kinds of incidents to the cops immediately. The SDSO needs to patrol more in those areas and pick up these gangsta wanna-be's every chance they can. It's the only way to keep them from taking over IB.

They also had their tatoo's photographed. I was in Carls Junior when they were were stopped but could not see the knife or other because of traffic going by.

At the Boca Rio-South end of Seacoast we were tagged inside one of our carports. We photographed this before it was painted over and instructed management to send to the police. This is the first time this has happened in the two years that I have owned there. Pretty darn brazen when we have some much Federal Law enforcement in our vicinity.

Hey robin Just to let you know while summer is still here, you might see plenty more tagging, especially on the rocks. Been surfing down there for 23 years and punks go there at night and just ruin the area. Graffiti, trash, etc.

Libi - here's an idea - let the YMCA or Boy & Girls Club run the Sports Park - use the savings to hire another deputy.

here's an idea - fire the worthless ass city manager that ran the city into the ground and use his wasted $1/4 million salary to fund the sports park and hire another deputy.... or council can raise property taxes to pay for their poor choices...
