Beaches from Oceanside to Imperial Beach are getting a makeover Saturday with the kickoff of the Regional Beach Sand Project 2012. The San Diego Association of Governments hopes to distribute 1.4 million cubic yards of sand in the next year.
SANDAG Chair and Encinitas Mayor Jerome Stocks and Imperial Beach Mayor and SANDAG Vice Chair Jim Janney will start the $28.5 million project Saturday morning in Imperial Beach.
The launch will be on Descanso Avenue and Seacoast Drive. A large ship will deposit sand on the beach through a pipe. Once the sand hits the beach, bulldozers will spread it along the shore.
Beaches are a part of the beach sand project include South Oceanside Beach, North and South Carlsbad beaches, Moonlight Beach, and Imperial Beach.
The Regional Beach Sand Project wants to provide bigger and wider beaches to help preserve recreational activities, tourism, protect property from storm damage, and provide sand for shorebirds.
