Storm Cancels SUPERSEAL Triathlon

Rain and wind led to event organizers ending bike and swim portions of the triathlon.

Sunday morning’s SUPERSEAL Triathlon was canceled due to extreme weather—a first in more than 30 years of SUPERFROG and SUPERSEAL triathlons.

The run/bike/swim was scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. with about 1,200 people registered for the triathlon and SEAL Sprint.

Saturday afternoon, athletes received an email notifying them that the triathlon would be reduced to a duathlon, with the 500-meter swim in San Diego Bay replaced with a mile run.

The 20K bike portion of the race was eliminated Sunday morning as wind gusts were forecast to reach 40 mph. Wind gusts were measured near 30 mph by Mitch Hall who works with race founder Moki Martin.

Hundreds stayed to run the 6K run—about 3.7 miles.

According to David Rahill who coordinated transition areas in the triathlon for subcontractor Koz Events, refund policy has yet to be determined.

Those registered to take part may receive credits toward a future SUPERFROG or SUPERSEAL triathlon.

After costs are covered, money raised go to benefit the Navy Seal Foundation, the Optimist Club of Coronado and the Islander Sports Foundation.

The next SUPERFROG is scheduled for Sept. 30.
