Pensions Paid to IB Firefighters Among Top in County

According to the Union Tribune, Imperial Beach firefighters pensions require no payment from employees who can retire at age 60 and be paid 90 percent of their salary every year.

In an age where local, state and national government fight budget battles, pension has become a kind of dirty word, but the Imperial Beach Fire Department is among nine cities in San Diego County who still offer top benefits.

According to The Watchdog, the San Diego Union Tribune's investigative reporting team, fives cities in San Diego County have firefighters or police officers who receive pensions but are not required to contribute to their retirement funds.

Escondido and Coronado offer these kinds of pensions to firefighters and police while National City, Imperial Beach and San Marcos offer them to firefighters.

Should an employee hired at age 30 retire at 50, they would receive 60 percent of their salary every year for the rest of their life. Retire at 60 and receive 90 percent of salary, the UT said.

A total 83 government employers in the area were surveyed for the story.
