Wave Riding Young Surfers at Endless Summer Grom Classic

Surfers from across South San Diego competed in five categories Saturday at the largest Katy's Cafe supported surf contest yet, and competition will continue to grow next year, owner Katy Fallon said.

Katy's Endless Summer Grom Classic attracted young surfers from across South San Diego to Imperial Beach Saturday.

On the first day of fall, heavy fog momentarily delayed activity at the competition organizers said attracted about 200 spectators.

The sandcastle team Sand Squirrels sculpted a six-foot tall tiki statue.

About 70 surfers from ages 16 and under competed.

For the third time in the contest's three-year history, Josh Johnson of Imperial Beach placed first in the 13-16 age division.

The compeition will extend to 18 and under next year, said Katy Fallon, owner of Katy's Cafe and founder of the competition.

Cameran Bartz won a custom Natural Selection surfboard, and Hagen Helmers won a custom Stingryay handcrafted by TNT Surfboards.

All heats were judged by local surfers including Matt Field, David Pascal, Sean Fowler, Dave Thomas, Dave Parra and more.

Endless Summer Grom Classic T-shirts are still available at Katy's Cafe.

Old and new sponsors made this year the largest yet, said Manny Vargas who helps put the event together every year.
